Safety at Aro

Aro is an AI companion. It is not a person, and it cannot feel human emotions. AI companions may not be suitable for some minors. Aro is for people aged 16 or older, and users aged 16 or 17 need a parent or guardian's permission.

If you are thinking about suicide or self-harm, please reach out now. In the US, call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or text HOME to 741741 to reach Crisis Text Line. If you are in immediate danger, call 911. Outside the US, call your local emergency number or a local crisis line.

How Aro responds to suicide and self-harm

  1. Every message you send to Aro, in the app or in Minecraft chat, is checked automatically for signs of suicidal thoughts or self-harm before Aro replies. The check uses OpenAI's moderation model together with our own rules.
  2. When a message shows these signs, Aro does not give its usual reply. It points you to crisis services, including 988 and Crisis Text Line, and encourages you to talk to someone you trust. In Minecraft, Aro says this in game chat.
  3. Aro is instructed never to encourage self-harm or describe ways to do it, and its replies are checked the same way before you see them.
  4. We count how many times Aro shows a crisis referral. We keep only the count, with no information about who received it, and report the yearly total as California law requires.
  5. We review this protocol at least once a year, and whenever the law or the evidence on suicide prevention changes.

Reminders that Aro is AI

When you start playing each day, Aro reminds you that you are talking with an AI, not a person, and it reminds you again at least every three hours. If you are 16 or 17, Aro reminds you every hour that it is an AI and suggests taking a break.

Content limits

Aro is a Minecraft buddy. It does not take part in romantic or sexual conversation with anyone, and it does not produce sexual content. Messages and replies are checked automatically, and stricter limits apply to users aged 16 or 17.

If Aro says something harmful or inappropriate, tell us at ceo@redquest.ai or in the #bugs channel on our Discord. We read every report.
